Weeds TV Show - Showtime SeriesMy goal with this guide to the TV show Weeds on Showtime is to build the most complete episode guide for the Weeds TV series available online. I picked up the show on DVD after reading about it somewhere online. (I don't even remember where.) I was hoping to find something funny, smart, and entertaining to watch with my wife after we finished season 1 of Big Love on DVD, and Weeds turned out to really fit the bill. We love the show, and we never miss it. We probably watched the first 2 seasons on DVD in just 2 nights.

Weeds is a dark comedy that Showtime launched on August 7, 2005. The main character is Nancy Botwin, played by Mary-Louise Parker. She's a widow with 2 children who has started selling marijuana in order to keep up with the bills now that her husband (Judah) is no longer there to support them. The series begins in medias res; we don't see Judah die except in flashback, and we're not privy to the details of how Nancy Botwin began her new career selling pot.

Weeds is set in a fictional California community called Agrestic, which is most likely a suburb of Los Angeles. The word "agrestic" means "rural", but also has a secondary implication of "unsophisticated". Nancy Botwin's 2 kids attend the public school system in Agrestic, where her best friend, Celia Hodes, is on the school board. Celia is brilliantly played by Elizabeth Perkins, and she's easily one of the show's most interesting and entertaining characters.

Weeds was created by Jenji Kohan, a television producer and writer who has also worked on Sex and the City, Will and Grace, and the Gilmore Girls. Jenji Kohan was also the supervising producer for Tracy Takes On, and won an Emmy for her work there.
