Horror Fiction PublicationsThis page serves as a listing of websites which offer horror fiction magazines. I had trouble finding places where I could read horror fiction, so I decided to put together a page about horror fiction publications that would provide a better resource than what was otherwise available. I'm only listing actual print horror publications here. Online-only publications are not listed. Some magazines feature science fiction and fantasy AND horror, but I've chosen to only list horror focused publications here. I'm, also guilty of being American-centric, or at least English-centric. I'm not listing any horror fiction magazines written in languages other than English here either. This list is useful for a specific type of reader only. Apex Science Fiction Horror and Digest - These guys also publish books, but their magazine is exactly the kind of thing a horror fiction fan like me is looking for. They're currently offering (at the time of this writing) a lifetime subscription for $100. I don't know whether or not to recommend that commitment to others, because it seems like genre fiction magazines might or might not last long enough for a lifetime subscription to be worth the money you invested in it. But I signed up for a lifetime subscription in order to support what I think is a really great magazine. The theme of the magazine? "Where weird science and horror collide." I love that tagline. Cemetery Dance - This magazine used to be available at my local Barnes and Nobles, but alas, no more. But they offered a lifetime subscription for $175, so I decided to go ahead and jump on board for that. A list of some of the more notable contributors to Cemetery Dance reads like a who's who of horror fiction authors: Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub...Their website is really old school, but so's mine, so I don't have any complaints about that. I was able to find what I was looking for there anyway, and that's more important than flash and glitter anyway. City Slab - They are not exclusively devoted to fiction, but fiction makes up a large part of what their magazine offers. Some of their nonfiction contents have included interviews with horror movie personalities, horror boardgame reviews, and horror movie reviews. They didn't offer a lifetime subscription at the time of this writing, but they did have a package deal where I got issues 6 through 11 along with a 4 issue subscription for $45. Seemed like a pretty good deal to me. I had a little trouble finding their subscription ordering since it was at the bottom of a page where you could order current and back issues - if I published a magazine, I'd have the subscription options above the back-issue ordering options. But I can't wait to receive my package deal. Dark Discoveries - The artwork on the covers of this one is pretty fantastic. They had a subscription option where you could get 8 issues for about $40, and that included shipping. Looks like a pretty professional outfit. H.P. Lovecraft's Magazine of Horror - They have featured fiction in the past from Brian Lumley and Richard Matheson. The magazine also features nonfiction commentary related to the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. The link points to the subscription page on WildSide Press, who publishes the magazine. I was disappointed that I couldn't find a more robust online presence, but at the same time, this section of the site focuses on traditional print publications. A four issue subscription was only $19.95, and one of the shipping options was free, so this seemed like a good value. Midnight Street - This is a British horror magazine. They publish 3 issues a year, and a subscription is $32. They are closed to new submissions from writers at the time I write this. I hope that this means they've got a lot of really high-quality spooky stuff to publish coming up. Not One Of Us - They describe their content as "dark fantasy", and they've been publishing for a long time. The subscription process on their website was decidedly unfriendly. I had to click on "contact us" to find information about subscriptions, and the only payment option available was to mail a check to the editor. This might be really good reading, but it seems to be a "small press" horror publication in the true sense of the word. They pay 1/4 cent per word to writers, with a $5 minimum payment. (The submission guidelines were also in the contact us section of the site.) Shroud Magazine - This is a newer magazine at the time I write this. (The second issue is just coming out.) Judging from the cover artwork featured on the site, it looks really cool. They acknowledge that magazines tend to come and go pretty quickly, but they also say they hope to continue for quite a while in the horror fiction space. Tim Deal is the editor and publisher. A subscription is $24.99 and the magazine is published bimonthly. Something Wicked - This one's published in South Africa. Back issues are available for purchase on their website. They also have a reasonably active forum where you can interact with the publishers of the magazine. The subscription for one year was about $35 there, but it could vary based on the conversion rate for pounds. Subterrenean Magazine - These guys publish work by some of the bigger names in the field, including people like Joe Lansdale, Harlan Ellison, and Lucius Shepard. I was unable to find a way to subscribe, but it looks like most of their books are released and available to order in softcover or hardcover. According to their about us page, Subterrenean has a special relationship with Joe Lansdale and they're publishing much of his so far unpublished work. Weird Tales - A lot of their fiction is available online, so you can preview the type of fiction that they publish before deciding to shell out the money for a subscription. Weird Tales was originally a pulp publication in the 1920's and 1930's. This incarnation of the title began in 1988, but there were other editions of the magazine prior to that. Weird Tales is also published by WildSide Press, along with H.P. Lovecrat's Magazine of Horror. Please contact me if you publish a horror fiction magazine and would like to be included in the listings here. |
