Batman R.I.P. Observations and ThoughtsNote - this is a long page, so scroll down and scan through the headings to find what you're looking for here.
The questions that DC keeps asking:
The third question seems to be leading the reader to think that Bruce Wayne will die in this storyline. It's early to tell yet, but I doubt they'll actually kill Bruce Wayne. And if they do, he won't stay dead. (Although I do remember some rumors a year or so back that Bruce Wayne would be killed, Dick Grayson would be the new Batman, and Wayne would become one of the New Gods.) Batman #676 Review and ObservationsI thoroughly enjoyed the writing and artwork for the first issue in the Batman RIP saga. The Alex Ross cover really makes the issue into something special, and the splash page of Batman and Robin on a rooftop was supercool too. One aspect of the story I thought was interesting was Alfred and Robin's conversation about how Bruce has become obsessed with the whole Black Glove idea, and how he's talking about some "massive, paranoid web of interconnected events." This reminded me of Watson's skepticism when Holmes explained Moriarty's being at the center of so much villainy. If that's a clue as to what's coming, then it could mean that the Joker is the Black Glove, since the Joker is Moriarty to Batman's Holmes. On the other hand, if Morrison is a fan of The Seven Per Cent Solution from Nicholas Meyer, this could tie into Bruce Wayne's parents in a big way, since that was also a major part of that storyline. In fact, we learned that Moriarty was actually Holmes' tutor as he was growing up. But I digress. I also thought it was cool when Tim Drake referred to Damien as "the son of Satan". I think that's a clue too. Batman #677 Review and ObservationsAgain, the artwork, inside and out, is gorgeous. And the writing is solid, as usual. The revelations about Wayne's parents, and Alfred's more or less suspicious activity makes one wonder if Alfred isn't going to turn out to be a really sinister character. The writing seems to be hinting at that, but it could also be a red herring. Batman RIP Spoilers & Plot SpeculationI've found little on the Internet which would reveal spoilers to Grant Morrison's Batman RIP storyline. But the one place I found the most spoilers was at DC Comics' own site. The blurbs about the upcoming issues of these comics do include some plot spoilers. I've made a list of what plot spoilers I have gleaned from the blurbs:
Unanswered questions abound. Just because Tim Drake is taking over as Batman does not mean that this is a permanent change, but interviews have indicated that this story will have serious repercussions in the Batman books that will last at least until 2010. My guess is that Bruce Wayne will no longer be Batman, but Tim Drake or Dick Grayson will take over as Batman. Possibilities for the new Batman/Robin team include:
Who Are The Club of Villains? The Club of Villains includes the following members:
Who Is The Black Glove? We don't know who the Black Glove is, but several possibilities exist:
There was an old story about Bruce Wayne as a young boy going to a party with his father in a Batman costume of some kind. Since one of the preview blurbs indicated we'd see the return of the first Batman, I think it's quite possible that we're going to find out that Thomas Wayne really did fake his own death. That doesn't mean he's The Black Glove though. Batman RIP ChecklistI should also supply a list of what issues of what comic books the Batman RIP storyline runs through: Batman
Detective Comics
Nightwing
Robin
Batman and the Outsiders
