Comic Book ReviewsI've been reading comic books since I was a kid. The first comic book I remember was from the early 1970's, and it was the earliest appearance of Solomon Grundy on Earth-One in DC Comics. Back in those days, DC's continuity had gotten long and complicated, so they set some of their older stories on Earth-2, and made the current stories set on Earth-One. They were basically parallel dimensions. Anyway, in this story, which I had to have my dad read to me because I wasn't old enough to read yet, the Parasite uses some kind of crystal to grow particles in the sewer into a new Solomon Grundy. The character was a sort of hulk-like character, and he was strong and simple-minded, just like the Hulk. Superman eventually gave him a cape and stranded him on another planet. On the other planet, gravity was lighter than here, and Solomon Grundy could fly. I seem to remember Superman musing that maybe someday Solomon Grundy would become that world's superhero. That story got me hooked. The next story I remember was the Batman classic "The Laughing Fish". And some more Superman stories. In high school I discovered Marvel Comics, and I grew to love The X-Men and The New Mutants. We started ordering comic books through my friend Joe's Westfield Comics account. Lots of fun. In college we bought our comics at the local comic book store in Denton, TX from a guy named Jim. He reminded me of Jim Belushi. Lots of good comic books during those days. (1988-1992 or so). |
